I'm a Barbie girl, in a... real-world

The time has come and finally, last night I got to watch the movie, here is a no-spoilers reference to the movie.

Barbie girl background

To be quite honest the hype started building up inside of me ever since it was made public that Margot Robbie had been selected for the role... but honestly, she was not selected for it, she was born for it!

As a child, I had one single "baby" doll, that I liked - mainly because she was a gree-eye version of me (same chicks, same hair), and the state-of-the-art hand-knitted doll by my grandma when I was much younger. Other than this, Barbie had my undivided attention.

My Barbie worked in an office and had a huge house - in my mind that is since I never got the official Barbie house, so I had to improvise and use my model toy kitchen as a house- she had multiple cars and a horse thanks to my brother lending me his toys. She dated G.I.Joe for a while and then move on to date Aladdin, who in my eyes was always underdressed for her.

My Barbie had friends, and lady's nights, and managed to raise a kid while working, traveling, and enjoying life. Yesterday I realized how much of a wish list this was- except for raising children alone-, though I did not look at all like my first Barbie, I was projecting on her so much without even realizing it!

I did however wish for a perfectly styled blond mane for many years, and last night I was so happy to see that Margot rocked so many of the classical Barbie hairstyles, my inner child was screaming!

Each outfit from her and the other characters is just precious! The setting, the fantasy, the music, it is all mesmerizing...but I will get to that later.

The movie is more emotional than I expected it to be, and maybe the distance and not being in the same city as my mom, my grandma, and most of the strong women I admire so much, the movie hit harder. Not only was I tearing up with some dialogues, but also I mentally hugged my mom and my grandmas as hard as I could, since the examples they set for me are so deeply embedded in my beliefs from a young age, that while playing I always envisioned strong independent women.

The two sides of my extensive family have their foundations in Matriarchy, which explains a big chunk of my perception of social constructions such as gender roles. It's so contrasting to see your grandma be the decision-maker, guide, and main emotional support of a whole family, and then seeing how in the "real-world" women have this crazy set of expectations placed upon them as I explain in detail here.

The Barbie world

I found the portrayal of Barbieland quite appealing, so in the mood of Barbie, and to be honest quite as I imaged Barbie's life to be, with a world of possibilities in the professional world, spontaneous dance scenes? Yes, please! A good sorority feeling?... heck yeah!

The outfits are so meticulously made, even the cups and cutlery, the appliances! I never had a Barbie house but I indeed had a Barbie closet, Barbie cabinets, and kitchen, and it all looked as portrayed in the movie!

I was very happy to see the variety of Barbies portrayed including Stacey, and even Midge! However, I did miss a specific Barbie that was not portrayed...no spoilers I know! Let's see if you can guess who that is.

Ken's ridiculously toned abs were also precisely portrayed and was also quite happy to see the Ken outfits and even possible merchandise (hint: hoodies) from this movie that I would love to buy.

Though I really like Ryan Goslin, I should confess I did not see him as the first choice of Ken, but he did a great job in being funny, singing along, and let's be honest so good-looking too.

Barbiland looks and "feels" a lot like I had imagined it as a kid, and for that I am thankful!

Another positive surprise was to see so many of the attendees to the local premier wearing pink! including myself of course! Some of the outfits were super nice, and I almost felt like asking for a group picture! The vibes and overall mood in the movie theater were quite cheerful, which I absolutely enjoyed.

In conclusion, with all the promotion tours and red carpet looks that Margot rocked for the last few months, plus a childhood as a Barbie girl, my expectations of this film were high, and they were exceeded!

Big respect for Greta Gerwig´s work, I can only imagine her also playing with Barbies as a kid, allowing her to create this amazing world that made my inner child smile, hop and do silly dances out of happiness.

My suggestion is if you didn't consider it before, do watch the Barbie movie, and also if possible go and hug your mom and grandma.

I was in tears even before playing the video! Recently started watching Bluey and to be honest I am saviouring every episode, making sure not to rush through them. Luce as a kid would have love it too! Without all the sometimes extreme drama cartoons such as "Candy", "Peline" and the anime series called in Spanish "La Ranita Demetan" displayed. I also remember feeling sad and stressed after watching some of them...But Bluey is so not like that. I am sure this is appreciated by kids and parents equally. Cheers to all healthy, innocent and non invasive copying mechanisms! And thanks for sharing this one! 😍
