Short films to remember the beauty of life
"Everything has beauty but not everybody sees it" - Confucius.
Last weekend I was at a Spanish #ShortFilm night at a school in my city. The language department of this school and its students organized this event in which tapas and drinks were offered, and six Spanish short films were shown.
Back in Mexico, I used to go to this sort of event more often - especially in my student years- so when I got invited to this event I immediately had a flashback of all those amazing international films that still roam in my mind.
For this occasion, the films were selected by students, and after the screening, we all voted for our favorite. The public opinion pretty much unambiguously enjoyed and was positively shocked by two films: “La Banyera” de Sergi Martí, y “Timecode “ de Juanjo Giménez Peña.
The beauty of empathy
"La Banyera" Synopsis: "Ramon Riera is taking a well-deserved bath when suddenly his cell phone rings. On the other end of the line is Clara, a girl who is persistently trying to sell him life insurance." In its 19 minutes of duration “La Banyera” covers important and relatable topics. Including depression, loneliness, and the struggles of staying in a job that makes us feel miserable and that keeps us away from our dreams…But above all, empathy is the key component.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, empathy is "the ability to share someone else's feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person's situation". On any given day that is an easy task right? But what about those days when you are also at your lowest... can you still spare kindness and patience at your worst? This is what really struck me, we are all potentially dealing with something personal, therefore empathy is key. Yes, this person or that situation is "making me lose my patience", or "making me" angry, but what if their day - or life- is also going downhill? That is when tenderness and goodwill are most needed, and when they can make a major impact.
Creativity to allow happiness
"Timecode"
Synopsis: “Luna is a security guard who works in the parking lot of an office. Tired of her job and her boss, she takes turns with Diego, whom she barely sees a few seconds a day. After a curious discovery, Luna discovers a way to communicate with her partner” This short film made me laugh, made me wish and hope like a teenager, and also made me tear up while confronting myself on whether I am doing enough or not to add beauty to my own life.
I absolutely loved every minute of it. It was a hug to my inner child and a pat on my back as an adult self.
I honestly believe this short film is a Masterpiece, capturing the magic of having the courage to go beyond the flat perception of reality. Boring dead-end job? No, problem! I create my own happiness!
It also reminds me of a German phrase I like: "Jeder ist seines Glückes Schmied", which translates to "everyone forges their own destiny", or in this case their own happiness.
Both of these short films made me think of this amazing song from Depedro and Russian Red. "Beauty waits for you in every corner, And it would never ever let you alone... alone
You always keep in mind.."
In the end, we just need to be receptive to all the little wonders of life... so keep your eyes peeled!

Felicidades!!!!🥳
I was in tears even before playing the video! Recently started watching Bluey and to be honest I am saviouring every episode, making sure not to rush through them. Luce as a kid would have love it too! Without all the sometimes extreme drama cartoons such as "Candy", "Peline" and the anime series called in Spanish "La Ranita Demetan" displayed. I also remember feeling sad and stressed after watching some of them...But Bluey is so not like that. I am sure this is appreciated by kids and parents equally. Cheers to all healthy, innocent and non invasive copying mechanisms! And thanks for sharing this one! 😍
